I have been working with Doug consistently for the last year and a half, and I can honestly say his work ethic is second to none. He completes all the workouts I plan for him and has been training aerobically on his elliptical 5-6 days a week. Consistently and slowly he has been building up his aerobic base - he’s 5 levels higher on the elliptical trainer now than when he started.
Doug’s also incorporated gradual dietary changes, working at reducing the glycemic index and carbohydrate load of his food plan. The result: a 55 pound weight loss and much improved health and vitality.
His latest challenge is learning how to swim. I remember our first lesson, and he was very tight. Now after 10 lessons his form is near perfect, he’s relaxed, and strokes with efficiency. In a few short months he’ll be able to swim continuously. Doug continues to be a role model for those who set their mind to accomplish a goal and then stick with it.
Here’ s Doug’s fitness journey in his own words:
“In June 2007 I made the impulsive step to agree to go on a 15 day hike to the base camp of Mount Everest in October that year. At the time I was 235 ponds and had never done any hiking. I repeat “any hiking.” My wife thought I was crazy and I think Grant thought I was crazy too. Nevertheless, he worked with me and developed a program that worked for me. I lost weight, was well prepared, and enjoyed the trip immensely.
“Unfortunately in the next 3 years my fitness level went down as my weight level went up during a time when I went through serious health challenges that limited my exercise program. In July 2011, with my health issues behind me and my weight at 245 pounds, I reached a level of disgust with my condition and reached out to Grant again. We met monthly and developed an exercise program and improved diet designed to result in permanent change.
“I had tried crash diets in the past, but the results were never sustainable. Grant was continually working to find ways to develop exercises and diet habits that were incremental and workable for me in my condition, work, and life schedule. He continued to make modifications and make changes so I could achieve the results without believing I was making a sacrifice or resenting an overly challenging exercise program. Grant had to teach me not to jump into the "no pain – no gain" plan but to build gradually and continually exercise within my proper heart rate.
“The rates were amazing. From July 1 2011 to November 27 2012 I have lost 55 pounds. I exercise 5-7 days per week and have reached that point where it is not a burden and I feel better after exercising. I am fully confident that I have made lifestyle changes that are permanent. I feel better and have surely added years to my life expectancy. I also know without a doubt that this change is lasting.
“I thank Grant for custom designing a program that works for me, and I know that I could never have done it alone. I am 59 years old and as we age it gets much harder to lose those extra pounds or to develop and stick to an effective exercise routine. I feel I am there and it has been life changing.”
